Development and Sustainability program (DS) offers a generalist master’s and doctoral program based on an interdisciplinary approach to international sustainable development. The aim is to build upon shared expertise in the Department of Development and Sustainability and offer an academic program that has a broader scope than current academic offerings. A broader and less specialized program will be especially attractive to institutions looking for managers with a broad knowledge of development and sustainability related issues, and candidates who may not want to narrow their academic and research skills but rather get a broader understanding of development and sustainability issues in the region and beyond. The program also responds to the needs for capacity building regarding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Asian region and beyond since the concept of sustainability calls for expertise in both the environmental and social dimensions of long-term development.
In the current context of rapid social, economic, technological and environmental changes in Asia, it is imperative to understand the effects of change on various sub-groups: women, men, indigenous peoples, different classes, and other social groups. Gender and Development Studies (GDS) highlights both the need for specialized academic degree awarding studies in gender and development, and the integration of gender analysis and gender relation perspectives in AIT’s other fields of study. GDS offers graduate level courses and provides substantial input to student’s masters and PhD dissertation research. Short courses and workshops are also offered on gender planning and gender analysis in various development fields.
By functioning as an academic arm of community-based efforts for the advancement of women and sustainable development, GDS aims to work as a regional center of excellence in the field of gender, technology and development studies, and to integrate gender as a key intellectual perspective and ethical concern in AIT as well.
The NRM academic program is designed to train students in the fields of sustainable use and management of natural resources, community-based natural resources management, forest carbon accounting, biodiversity conservation, valuation of ecosystem services, economics of NRM, NRM and climate policy, technologies and sustainability, and assessment of natural resources using conventional and modern temporal and geospatial technologies. NRM focuses teaching and research on both terrestrial and coastal resources and ecosystems from social and physical science perspectives. NRM also provides training, outreach and capacity-building opportunities and has assisted many universities in Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam and more to develop their academic programs.
UEM Academic Program responds to the needs to examine urban growth and environmental issues from management and planning perspectives to contribute to sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities. Teaching and research in UEM emphasize systems and interdisciplinary approaches from urban and regional planning, infrastructure and resources management, governance and economics, sustainability science, and integrate into problem-solving frameworks, within multi-scale and multi-stakeholder settings.
UEM provides various capacity building opportunities including urbanization processes, decision support systems, spatial and environmental assessment, strategic and project planning, and emerging themes (e.g., climate and disaster resilience, smart cities, circular economy, and sustainable tourism) of complex urban regions.
The RRDP focuses on rural poverty, improvement of the quality of life and social and economic development. Practice oriented rural-regional planning is carried out regularly at district and sub-district levels following a participatory and integrated approach. Attention is paid to management of development institutions, infrastructure and resources. Sectoral and spatial planning is equally emphasized along with the management of rural development programs and local development projects to strengthen rural communities for sustainable development.
Selected areas of concern are: concepts and processes of rural and regional development; community development planning; agricultural development and planning; planning and management of rural development programs and projects; NGO management policy and development administration; sustainable development theories and practices; and decentralization and governance.
Disasters have become a huge threat. Rapid population growth, urbanization, poverty, and climate change have increased the vulnerability of many Asian countries. Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management is offering interdisciplinary degrees and short-term trainings for capacity-building and skill development.
