Prof. Kyoko Kusakabe at the Asia Pacific Social Forum 2025

2 November 2025 | Thammasat University, Bangkok
Prof. Kyoko Kusakabe, Professor at the Gender and Development Studies, academic program ( AIT_GDS) at the Department of Development and Sustainability, AIT delivered an inspiring keynote during the session “Feminists Against Repression: Resistance and Peacebuilding in Burma/Myanmar.” The event, organized by the Gender Equality Network, brought together scholars, activists, and practitioners dedicated to advancing gender justice, peace, and human rights.
In her address, Prof. Kyoko highlighted how feminist movements globally—such as in Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, and South Sudan—have played transformative roles in peace negotiations, reconciliation, and conflict resolution. She emphasized that in the context of Myanmar, empowering and strengthening women’s networks remains one of the most effective pathways toward achieving peace, democracy, and long-term stability.
The keynote was followed by a dynamic panel discussion featuring feminist and LGBTQ+ leaders who shared powerful insights on resistance under repression, gendered leadership in emerging governance structures, and the unique challenges faced by ethnic minority women. They stressed the importance of youth leadership, inter-ethnic solidarity, and feminist coalitions in sustaining resilience and driving inclusive political futures despite ongoing conflict.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, reinforcing that feminist and gender-diverse leadership is essential for building a peaceful and just future for Myanmar.
