29 July 2025: From July 17 to July 24, 2025, Tania Afrin Tonny, a doctoral candidate, and Naw Hsar Hay Gay, a Master’s student in the Gender and development Studies (GDS) academic program at the School of Environment, Resources, and Development (SERD), participated in a student exchange program at Ochanomizu University in Tokyo, Japan. Conducted under the academic exchange agreement between Ochanomizu University and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), the program provided an excellent opportunity for both students to share their research, expand their perspectives, and enhance their academic growth.

During the exchange, the students attended lectures by expert professors who offered new directions and thought-provoking insights related to their areas of study. They also visited several organizations and participated in academic seminars, interactive discussions, and interview sessions. The workshops they attended deepened their understanding of current research trends in gender, international labor migration, and conflict-related sexual violence in various contexts.

Ms. Tania Afrin Tonny shared,
“Participating in the student exchange program at Ochanomizu University in Tokyo was a unique opportunity to broaden the scope of my research. The support and cooperation from professors and peers were truly inspiring, encouraging me to pursue future academic collaborations. The insightful feedback I received during the workshop helped me reflect more critically on my work and strengthened my commitment to contributing meaningfully to my field of research. This experience will always remain close to my heart.”
Ms. Naw Hsar Hay Gay shared,
“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to present my thesis and receive valuable feedback, which helped refine and strengthen my research. Engaging in seminars and interviews also sparked new ideas that will enrich my thesis further. Beyond academics, I gained meaningful insights into Japanese culture—particularly their systematic lifestyle, efficient infrastructure, and deep respect for punctuality. This experience has broadened my academic perspective while allowing me to explore the rich history and culture of Japan.”

In addition to the academic activities, the students explored various historical and cultural sites in Tokyo, immersing themselves in Japanese traditions, cuisine, and advanced infrastructure. A highlight of the trip was their visit to the city of Yokohama, where they experienced the vibrant atmosphere of a modern city by the bay.

Overall, both students agree that this exchange program offers a valuable platform to explore a new environment, gain fresh perspectives, and realize their academic and personal potential. The experience has inspired them to strive for continuous growth, build confidence, and become more responsible and responsive individuals. They expressed their heartfelt gratitude to their supervisors, peers, AIT, Ochanomizu University, and all the organizations that welcomed them in Tokyo.
